Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

USA, 1953 (Howard Hawks; 1h 31m)

Hawks’s second and final foray into the musical genre (he had previously helmed the 1948 A Song is Born with Danny Kaye), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes sees him utilise his remarkable skill in harnessing star-power to create some of the most enduring images of Marilyn Monroe, with its most famous number, ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’, persisting as a pop cultural staple to this day.

Oh, that was just … fun! In other movies, you have two men who go out looking for pretty girls to have fun with. We pulled a switch by taking two girls who went out looking for men to amuse them: a perfectly modern story.
