His Girl Friday

USA, 1940 (Howard Hawks; 1h 32m)

A gender-swapped reworking of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s landmark Broadway play The Front Page (previously filmed in 1931), His Girl Friday is perhaps Hawks’ best-loved screwball comedy, a film that sent the genre’s motor-mouthed brand of farce into overdrive.

I’ve already said that it’s easy, when one sees crowds rushing off to see a movie, to make another movie almost exactly like it. What is more fun is trying something new, and hoping it will work. That’s how I hit upon the tempo of my movies. I made a film called His Girl Friday in which the characters spoke so fast that the characters kept stepping on each other’s lines. The public liked it.
