India, 1954 (Bimal Roy; 2h 22m)

Also known as Naukri (Job), this tragic-comic Hindi-language film stars Kishore Kumar, one of the most popular singers of the Indian film industry, with signature music composed and arranged by Salil Chowdhury, Roy’s collaborator on his earlier masterpiece Do Bigha Zamin, screened in Bologna in 2014.

The dreams and aspirations of the educated youth [are] shattered as they struggle in the city for employment, in the ensuing years after India attained independence.

Naukri […] deals with unemployment as an ominous cloud looming over the Indian middle class, the disregard of which may be taken to have led to the escalation of widespread civil unrest that enveloped Bengal in the 1960s and 1970s.
